Mom Runs LA

In addition to the cost, one of the reasons I don’t do 10ks every weekend is because it can be an ordeal. You have to get your gear ready the night before. You have to wake up early and drive to the race, usually getting there hours early. Then after the race you have to look for your family who went through their own ordeal to cheer you on.

Last Thursday, I did the ideal 10k for me. It was She Runs LA powered by Nike+. The run was digital, which meant that I could take my kids to school, come home and get my gear ready, and go run a 10k. Women all over Los Angeles participated by logging on to NikePlus.com and running during the 24 hour race period.

I convinced some of the lovely moms from my son’s elementary school to do the race along with me. My friend, Patricia, who I did the marathon with, ended up joining us as well. I mapped out a couple of different routes and we ended up doing a very hilly 10k. Not only was our run full of steep hills, but it was really hot on Thursday.

It was not easy for me, which I should have anticipated considering I haven’t run very much since the marathon. I was huffing and puffing and sweating like I was actually running a marathon. But I finished and so did everyone else. Everyone was fantastic.

I bought the Nike + GPS app for my iPhone and it’s very cool. When you run with it, it can track how far you’ve run, your pace, and the calories burned. And, it notifies you after every mile or kilometer you’ve run. Here are our 10K results.

Nike+ app says we burned 712 calories!!

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to the She Runs LA party, but I heard that it was a good time. A portion of the proceeds from the race were to be donated to Students Run LA, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to increase access to the sport of running for underserved youth across LA Unified School District.

Disclosure: I was given a promo code to enter the race for free plus I received a Nike+ armband.

She Runs LA Giveaway

Well, after the disaster that was the LA Marathon for me, I can finally run again. And I’m so excited that I can.

Nike is having a virtual run for women called She Runs LA. Starting at 4 p.m. April 27 and lasting 24 hours, participants can run a 10k and sync it to Nike using a Nike+ device, which is an iphone, itouch or Nike SportsBand. Women can do it alone or invite friends to join in.

Thanks to Nike, I’m giving away 50 promo codes to register for the race!

Anyone who signs up to do the run gets a Nike race shirt and access to a Hollywood red carpet party at the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles at 7 p.m. on April 28. There will a concert by Mike Posner, celebrities, and sports stars.

Even better than celebrities, if you do this race you don’t have to get up at 5 a.m., trek across town, and sit in the cold waiting for the race to start. You can walk out your front door and run anytime you want.

And the race is for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Students Run LA, a non-profit organization, whose mission is to increase access to the sport of running for under served youth across LA Unified School District.

The tickets are $35 for students and $50 for the general public. All you have to do to win a free promo code is be one of the first 50 people to leave a comment below with your contact information and I’ll email you the codes. You must live in the United States to enter. Thanks and Good Luck on the Run!

Disclosure: I wasn’t compensated for this post, but I was given a promo code to enter the race for free.
