Paranorman Review

mom blogger los angeles review

The movie “ParaNorman” hits movie theaters today. My boys and I knew about the movie months ago because of all of the billboards around our neighborhood. At first my 6-year-old was very excited to see it, but then the zombies on the billboards started to scare him a little.

My 8-year-old and I have no problem with zombies and couldn’t wait to see it. We watched the trailer and my 6-year-old still seemed skeptical. Then I made the genius move of showing him the trailer to “Coraline” by the same filmmaker. Well, the button-eyed mother did not help and he said he’d rather stay home. But after seeing the movie, I think he would have liked it. It is dark and yes zombies come out of the grave, but the message of acceptance and nonconformity is good and animation is very cool to watch.

It’s about Norman, a boy who talks to dead people including his grandmother (who is voiced by Elaine Stritch). He has a gift that his father, his sister, and most kids at school have not embraced. He’s bullied by the aforementioned and has one friend who he pushes away because he’s so used to being alone.

I liked Norman because he was so serious, which you don’t often see in kids’ movies. He ends up being the only one who can save the day (of course) by talking down a witch who wants to return from the grave to take over the town.

The movie was scary in parts, but I think kids who like ghost stories will love it. And once my younger son is a little bit older, I think he will, too.

My relatives have been asking me why I haven’t posted here as much. That’s because I’ve been over at MomsLA, where I am editor and co-founder, writing up a storm and making videos. Plus I had a post on Viva La Feminista today and a post on Tiki Tiki Blog a few weeks ago.

El Paso Positivo Block Party

This is the summer of getting fit and what better way to get fit than to dance? My boys are always asking me when we’re going to have a party so thanks to Latina Mom Bloggers and the California Milk Advisory Board, we started the first day of summer with a dance party. An “El Paso Positivo” dance party that is.

As the video explains, we started out with made-to-order milk shakes. We had vanilla, chocolate, and coffee ice cream and Real California Milk. We added chocolate syrup, fresh strawberries, and mango.

They were delightful and gave us a lot of energy to dance. This was the dance they had tried to learn, or should I say the girls tried to learn.

Teaching 4 to 6-year-olds a dance is not the easiest thing in the world. The girls were troopers and tried to follow the dance moves as the boys slam danced around them. There was a lot of jumping up and down so I think they definitely got a workout. In the end, it turned into El Paso Positivo freeze dance.

Every child went home with this adorable tshirt and El Paso Positivo song stuck in their head, which you can download and listen to while you exercise (I do!).

MomsLA is now part of the MomPulse Community on Youtube and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Every week MomPulse asks a question of the week and last week it was “What is your favorite recipe.”

My favorite dessert to serve to guests is flan. It’s impressive, it’s easy, and it’s delicious. It’s also naturally gluten-free. Here is my how-to video on making Mango Flan.

Tinkerbell Half Marathon

disneyland half marathon all women tinkerbell mom blogger los angeles

This past January, I was lucky enough to see Tinkerbell fly, run several miles through Disneyland at night after the park was closed, and high five Mickey Mouse. That is the kind of fun that the Disneyland Tinkerbell Half-Marathon Weekend has to offer.   Registration opens today at noon for the Half-Marathon, Neverland Family 5k Run, and the runDisney Kids Race January 18-20, 2013.

The Neverland race was in the evening the last time and it was fun running through the park when it was dark and empty. This year the race will be early Saturday morning, which will be much easier on the younger kids.  Or if they don’t want to do the 5K there is a 1-miler and 100, 200, and 400 meter dash. I did the half-marathon with 2 friends who were visiting for the weekend and I wasn’t the only one with a group. It’s an all-woman race and many are doing it for the first time. Tinkerbell is a great first race; it’s fun, mellow, and most people are in it to have fun, not so much to beat their best time.
As with all of the Disney races, you can wear costumes like these lovely ladies from Team Sparkle. If you do register, try to do it early. Prices go up after July 17 and again after September 4. It sold out last year as did the Disney Half Marathon so don’t procrastinate if you really want to do this race. The Disneyland Half Marathon in September sold out in February.

There are certain things I try to avoid because I know I will love them so much they will become a distraction. This is why I have avoided Instragram, the photo sharing app for iPhone. I love taking pictures and looking at pictures, but I don’t have time to edit and upload dozens of pictures at a time. That’s what I thought, but two weekends ago we visited my sister in Berkeley and I fell in love. Instragram is my new obsession. Here are my pics from the weekend.

El Paso Positivo – The Summer of Getting Fit

This is the summer of getting fit for me. In March, 2011 I ran the LA marathon and gained about 10 pounds during the training. It didn’t help that I was injured and stopped running for months. My muscle turned soft and I was tired from not exercising as much. I’ve lost a few pounds and I’m determined to get back to my pre marathon fitness level and then some.

I had already made that decision and  changed my exercise habits and my diet when I was contacted by the Latina Mom Bloggers. I will once again be a Positivity Ambassador for the California Milk Processor Board. And what a great coincidence, the theme is Shape Up For Summer! The campaign is encouraging families to get on a bike, go for a walk, or do a little dance.

This is the theme song for the campaign (that is strangely catchy) and the dance.

When you’re done learning the steps, make sure to drink your milk. The steps are definitely a workout and milk, especially chocolate milk, can help your muscles recover.

1)    Milk contains proteins like casein and whey that can help muscles rebuild after physical activity.

2)    Milk also has minerals that are important in preventing muscle cramping.

3)    Chocolate milk can be a smart alternative to sports drinks for cooling off after a good workout. – California Milk Processor’s Board

Hope you can join me in getting fit this summer. For more information, please visit El Maestro Del Vaso Medio Lleno on Facebook or Twitter

Breast Feeding; It's Not As Easy As It Looks

baby bottle mom blogger los angeles

“You’re starving him,” the pediatrician told me.

I looked down at my baby and started to weep. It had been a difficult pregnancy and it wasn’t any easier after my son was born. The doctor told us that nursing was simple. In fact he said, “I’ve only seen it not work once and the woman was doing it wrong.”

So basically, any idiot can nurse a baby. Just not this idiot.

When my son was born he came out blue. He was whisked away and within minutes (it felt like hours) he was back to me, pink and beautiful. When I tried nursing him, he couldn’t latch on. Years earlier, I had been there when my sister had her daughter and I remember what an overwhelming moment it was when my niece immediately started nursing. But for my boy and me it didn’t happen like that.

Not for lack of trying, though. The first night in the hospital a nurse grabbed my nipple, squeezed hard, and shoved it in my baby’s mouth. She then grabbed the back of his head and pushed. This wasn’t an effective breast feeding tutorial for us. Nurse after nurse came in and tried using a similar method. On the last day my son seemed to be getting enough milk.

But when it came time for our visit to the doctor days later it was clear that wasn’t the case. He was not gaining weight and had lost more than was normal. The doctor said to give it a few more days and supplement with pumping and he would be fine. The doctor suggested pumping every 2 hours and feeding every other hour until my milk came in properly. So that’s milk production every hour for 24 hours. The options were to do that or start giving him formula.

Formula was not an option. Everything I had read (and I read everything) said that if I didn’t nurse exclusively then I would give my son Type 1 Diabetes. My husband has Type 1 and another autoimmune disorder, celiac disease. Having those diseases aren’t the worst thing in the world, but I was going to do everything I could to make sure they didn’t happen because I couldn’t handle a breast pump or because I needed a few hours of sleep. So I became a nursing machine. I slept a half hour here, a half hour there. I was depressed and crazy. And when anyone told me I was depressed and crazy (they used nice words like postpartum depression) I didn’t listen. I had a job to do.

We went back to the doctor. He weighed my son and shook his head. “You’re starving him.” I burst into tears. I was failing at the one thing that was supposed to be the easiest thing; taking care of my baby. “You have to give him formula.” So even though it wasn’t what I had planned or wanted, my husband mixed a bottle of formula and fed my baby while I went to sleep.

When I woke up it was quiet. My baby wasn’t crying or fussy because he had eaten well, probably for the first time. And I wasn’t as crazy because I wasn’t as sleep deprived. There was no book that had prepared me for that (or what was to come), but I know that a couple of bottles of formula didn’t do irreparable harm. All the information I had on how it was supposed to work and what I was supposed to do made me feel like I was doing everything wrong. After a few weeks of supplementing with formula, I was back to nursing full time.

That was 8 years ago. I wish I had known about mom blogs then, but it was just me and the books.

Two Gluten-Free Chili Recipes

gluten free chili squash spinach black bean mom blogger los angeles

I’ve decided to give up pasta and bread, which has made me start craving my chili. I make butternut squash chili and turkey chili a lot in the winter, but it’s such a good, filling gluten-free dinner I may start making it in the spring, too.

This is the butternut squash recipe, but if you can’t get butternut squash you can use 2 to 3 chopped zuchinni.

Easy Butternut Squash Chili

½ large onion, finely chopped

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

1 can Trader Joe’s Roasted Tomatoes with Green Chile (or 1 4-ounce can of diced green chile and one can roasted tomatoes)

24 ounces butternut squash in cubes

12 ounces spinach

3 cans black beans

Saute the onion and garlic in a tablespoon of olive oil. Once the onions are soft add the tomatoes (or the tomatoes and green chile) and butternut squash. Cook until butternut squash is slightly soft. Add spinach and cook until wilted. Add beans and cook together for at least an hour. I usually transfer to a slow cooker for at least 4 hours. Add salt and pepper to taste. If you like more spice, add ½ teaspoon chili powder. Serve on its own or with shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

Turkey and Black Bean Chili

1 pound ground turkey

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

1/2 a large onion, finely chopped

1 can roasted tomatoes

3 cans of black beans

1 teaspoon to a tablespoon of brown sugar

salt, pepper, and chili powder to taste

Saute the onion and garlic in a tablespoon of olive oil. Once the onions are soft add the tomatoes. Remove from the pan. Add ground turkey to the pan and cook until browned. Transfer the turkey to a slow cooker and add the garlic, onion, and tomato mixture and 3 cans of black beans. Add chili powder and brown sugar to taste and let cook for 4 to 6 hours. Once it’s done add salt and pepper to taste. If you don’t have a slow cooker, cook monitored on the stove top on low. You can add shredded sharp cheddar or jack cheese or diced onions.

Wordless Wednesday: Downtown LA's Union Station

la's union station train station los angeles

When I told my husband that I went to Union Station in Downtown LA for the first time yesterday, he couldn’t believe I’d never been there. He took our boys one Sunday when I was out of town and it was one of the best outings they’ve ever had, he said. He told them it was just like the train station in Harry Potter, which made it magical for them. They toured the station, had lunch, and rode the train out to see the grandparents.

Here are my iPhone pictures from my own mini-tour of the station. The walk through the station was followed up by lunch at Homegirl Cafe.
