TRON: Legacy and TRON: The Original

TRON: Legacy and TRON: The Original Classic comes out as a boxed set today. When I was offered a review copy from Walt Disney Studios, I jumped on it.

When the original TRON came out I was 11. I had a huge crush on Bruce Boxleitner and I went to see it the first weekend it came out. Now several years (decades) later, I’m always looking for movies that my husband and I can watch with our boys and both TRONs were perfect.

It was interesting watching the movies one weekend after the other. The older version was campy fun and my boys liked it, but didn’t love it. In case you don’t know the story, a hacker, Jeff Bridges, gets sucked into a video game and has to fight his way out. I liked watching it again and loved seeing a young Jeff Bridges especially after seeing him play Rooster Cogburn in True Grit.

But once we watched TRON: Legacy we realized just how campy the first TRON was and is. I appreciated the blast from the past, but also really liked the new TRON with the awesome special effects and fast pace. It’s hard for me to stay awake when we watch a movie at home, but I watched TRON: Legacy from beginning to end. In the movie, the son of the Jeff Bridges goes looking for clues as to why his father disappeared and gets sucked into the game himself. My kids also preferred the new TRON, but still want to watch the old one again.

The box set comes withTRON: Legacy 3D Blu-ray, 2d Blu-ray, DVD + Digital Copy and TRON: The Original Classic 2D Blu-ray.

If you’re really into TRON and want to learn more about the movies from the men who made them, the directors from both movies will be at Best Buy in West Hollywood tonight from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Joe Kosinski, director of TRON: Legacy, and Steven Lisberger, director of the original TRON and producer of TRON: Legacy will sign the DVDs.

Disclosure: I wasn’t compensated for this post, but I was given a boxed set to review.
