The True Meaning of Valentine's Day

There’s a running joke around my house about Valentine’s Day and See’s Candy. My birthday is a couple of days before Valentine’s Day and I’ve always said that the only thing I’ve ever wanted on Valentine’s Day or my birthday was a box of See’s Candy.

Well, I mentioned it a lot, but my husband never took the bait. He would always come up with something else, like flowers or a card. Flowers are lovely, but they aren’t covered in chocolate or filled with coconut cream. Instead my friends would show up with a box of See’s for me. There’s nothing that says Valentine’s Day better than making fun of one’s husband.

I always thought that the best gift for Valentine’s Day was chocolate, but this Valentine’s Day I found out that the best gift of all is holding the kids back while you throw up at Disney’s California Adventure. And even better is to take them to school while you lay in bed with terrible stomach pains.

Nope, no See’s Candy this year because the thought of it is making me feel queasy. I finally got the stomach flu that tormented my two boys and husband last week. Luckily, I didn’t get it until the day after I did a 20-mile run for marathon training. Unluckily, I got in while on my son’s birthday trip to Disneyland.

This Valentine’s Day I’m reminded of what love really means. It’s not about candy or flowers or jewelry. It’s about having someone who’s wonderful enough to take care of you when you’re at your most disgusting.

I love you my fabulous husband. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Mini-Vanilla Cupcakes with Melted Chocolate Frosting

We did a lot of baking yesterday at La Casa de Condes. My kids and I wanted to make a nice Valentine’s Day treat for their teachers, and we also needed to make something with a chocolate theme for our Friday get-together with friends.

A nice chocolate-based mole sounded delightful to me, but the kids thought cupcakes were the better choice. I remembered that I had small ceramic heart-shaped baking dishes left over from last Valentine’s Day so we settled on Mini Gluten-Free Vanilla Cupcakes Frosted with Melted Chocolate. We bake everything gluten-free here because my husband has Celiac Disease and I had a gluten-free baking business. Unfortunately, I shut the business down shortly after my last large order of gluten-free flours came in, therefore, every Friday I’m featuring a different gluten-free recipe until I’ve gone through my stash. So far I’ve made Gluten-Free Blueberry Cake, Vegan Gluten-Free Chocolate Cake, Gluten-Free Lemon Pound Cake, and Decadent Gluten-Free Brownies.

I made this week’s recipe with butter and milk, but you can easily substitute the milk for soy milk and the butter for Earth Balance Vegan Butter Sticks. The recipe makes about 48 mini cupcakes or 24 regular cupcakes.

Mini Gluten-Free Vanilla Cupcakesvanilla batter
2 cups gf flour mix*
½ cup garbanzo bean flour
2 ½ teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons xantham gum
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup butter
1 ¾ cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanillasmall cupcake liners 2 eggs
1 ¼ cup milk

Preheat oven to 350°. Line mini-muffin pan with mini cupcake liners. In medium bowl, combine flours, baking soda, xantham gum, and salt.

In large bowl, using either an electric mixer or a hand mixer, beat butter for 30 seconds. Add sugar and vanilla and beat until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and beat for 1 minute per egg. Turn mixer to low and add 1/3 of the flour mixture

small cupcake filled

alternating with 1/3 of the milk until the flour and milk are just combined.

Scoop cake mixture into a large Ziploc Bag and cut off 1/8 of an inch off the tip, or use a pastry bag. Squeeze cake into the cupcake liners filling ¾ full. Bake for about 15 minutes or until the tops are browned and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool on a cooling rack. When they are completely cool frost with the melted chocolate.

Melted Chocolate Frosting
1 cup good quality semi-sweet chocolate chips
6 tablespoons butter

Melt chocolate chips and butter in a small saucepan on low heat until the mixture is smooth. Be careful not to burn. Let cool for 10 minutes. Stir chocolate a few times. Dip the tops of the mini cupcakes into the chocolate and place back on the cooling rack. Serve or store in an airtight container.

*Basic Gluten-Free Flour Mix from the Gluten-Free Gourmet Cooks Fast and Healthy
6 cups white rice flour
2 cups potato starch
1 cup tapioca flour
Store leftover flour in an airtight container

I'm 40!!! How the Hell Did That Happen?

Well, it happened. I’m 40. I know that everyone says they can’t believe it when they turn 40, but I really can’t believe it.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great. I have a wonderful husband, 2 fantastic kids, and a new career that I’m excited about. But I thought that at 40 I would feel differently, more mature maybe. Well, that’s definitely not the case. I spent most of Saturday making jokes revolving around the word “blow” after having my hair done at Blo Blow Dry Bar where their slogan is “Because You Can’t Blow Yourself.”

I don’t feel much differently than I did when I was 15 and hanging yvonne elise and sara yvonne and friendsaround my best friend’s Lara’s house watching Oprah. That same friend came all the way from Tucson to celebrate my 40th birthday with me last weekend. And so did three other of my closest friends. Maybe the reason why I don’t feel mature is because I have friends that make me feel so young. They are fabulous. Smart, incredibly funny, and genuinely good people. I’m so lucky to have them in my life.

And all of my friends really. My new friends in Los Angeles are also fabulous. Maybe one of the better parts of getting older is that you’ve gained the wisdom to pick great friends and stick with only the ones that are good to you.

Another thing about 40 that is shocking to me is how good I feel. I’m training for the LA Marathon and other than the days where we run 18+ miles, I feel pretty good. No, I feel really good. I don’t drink too much, or eat too much, or complain too much.

Basically, what I’m getting at is that 40 is ok. Whether it’s the new 30 or even the new 20, I’m kind of loving it.

Blo W Hollywood and My 40th Birthday Weekend

This past weekend was fantastic. I’m turning 40 this week and to celebrate my oldest and dearest friends came to visit.

We started our weekend on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. I’ll admit, I haven’t spent much time there in the 5-years I’ve lived in Los Angeles. I thought it was only for the rich and semi-famous, but we ended up finding some amazing deals at the chic little shops. My favorite was Purple Poppy where I found the dress I wore to my 40th birthday party. It looked expensive, but it was reasonably priced.

We followed that up with a delightful lunch at R+D Kitchen and one friend was thrilled when we saw some of the Comedians of Chelsea Lately. Another saw James Frain sitting outside at a café.

Grilled cheese with tomatosoup at Fig

We had dinner that night at Rustic Canyon, another delightful spot in Santa Monica on Wilshire. I think we had almost every small plate on the menu and they were all very good. The next morning after a run at the beach, the girls and I lunched at Fig in the Fairmont hotel in Santa Monica.

But the most over-the-top birthday fun was courtesy of Blo W Hollywood.

The Blo Blow Dry Bar celebrated its grand opening on Saturday and I was one of their guests.

I brought along two of my out of town friends, Shelley, and Lara. We were treated to cupcakes, pink champagne, and of course, Blo. That’s Blow Dry, I mean.

shelley beforeshelley afterWhen I usually get my hair cut (and colored! I am 40!), I can’t sit long enough to have my hair blow dried. I’ll jump up and leave with wet hair rather than sit through a blow dry.

But that wasn’t the case at Blo. Having my hair washed was such a treat and the blow dry turned out super cute. My hair is naturally big so I had it straightened into a smaller version of itself. Perfect.

After that, it was off to my 40 birthday party. It was wonderful to celebrate with my friends old and new. More about turning 40 later.

KCET Socal Connected: Paying to Play in LA Parks

KCET is airing a special about advertisements in city parks and I’m interested to see what it has to say. Some entertainment studios are paying the city to put up signs in the parks to advertise their movies. I live in a neighborhood littered with billboards, many with content I feel is inappropriate for my 5 and 7-year-old boys.

It’s sad that the parks are desperate enough to go this route. I’m not a fan of the constant barrage of product endorsements everywhere we look in LA, but on the other hand, if it helps keep the parks and libraries open, it might be the only option.

The special airs Thursday, February 10 at 9 p.m., and is part of an ongoing KCET series called “Show Me the Money.”
